Since you asked... here's why last year's World Cup semi-final felt like 9/11:
Because an unprecetented and inconceivable chain of events unfolded live on
television, leaving hundreds of millions of spectators in shock and disbelief;
because what happened didn't just appear totally unreal, but, given its setting
and circumstances, seemed so blatantly allegorical; and because perversely, it
kept escalating, until at around minute 30 of the match, just like on September
11 at around 10 am, no-one had the slightest idea if and when it would stop.
If there's one match in the history of soccer that cannot be understood by just
replaying the goals, then this is the one. So it's best to rewatch the entire
90 minutes, and then Godard's Allemagne neuf zéro. Pun intended, obviously, but
the combination itself is intentional as well. And who knows, it might even
provide some insights (or their aural equivalent) about sound mix and montage.
Of course, it's also a program about the Germans and their greatest victories,
but on that front, we don't expect anything fundamentally new to reveal itself.
Screensaver (bar mode) from 8:30 pm, screening (cinema mode) from 10:30 pm.
