A largely unseen Nouvelle Vague gem, thanks to the French censors who delayed
its release for two years and then gave it an 18+ rating. And that's not
because there is any nudity, but quite precisely because there is none: just a
female protagonist who, despite a cast of horny males, prefers to travel
unaccompanied and follow the proto-situationist trajectory implied in the
movie's title. Not only once but twice you'll hear her say she'd rather die
(than return to her family; than have a husband, kids and a job). What's so
great about La dérive is that it remains an open film, much less allegorically
arthouse than À bout de souffle or Cléo de 5 à 7, and, as hinted at above, much
less explicitly adult than L'éternité pour nous or Ecstasy of the Angels --
just to stake out the neighborhood. But of course, 18+ was a death sentence;
lead actress Jacqueline Vandal would only reappear once, in Trois filles
vers le soleil a.k.a. Erotic Urge, and unlike her male contemporaries, Paula
Delsol would never make another film. And that's why we don't love cinema.
